The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is facing intense criticism from opposition figures and political stakeholders following its decision to derecognise the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Key opposition leaders accused the electoral body of bias and alleged that its actions could weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, with some even calling for the removal of the INEC chairman. 
The controversy stems from an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, which has been plagued by internal disputes since 2025. INEC explained that its decision to delist figures such as David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola was based on a court order directing the commission to maintain the status quo until the legal battle over the party’s leadership is resolved. However, ADC leaders insist the move undermines their political participation, especially with upcoming elections approaching. 
The situation has raised broader concerns about Nigeria’s democracy, with political groups warning that the combination of judicial вмеш interference and administrative decisions could weaken opposition parties and reduce electoral competitiveness.
