The Katsina State Zakat and Waqf Board has disbursed about ₦4.7 billion in zakat to vulnerable residents across the state, as part of efforts to reduce poverty and strengthen social welfare systems. The Executive Secretary, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, disclosed this during a regional social protection meeting, noting that the initiative reflects renewed commitment to institutionalising zakat as a structured support mechanism. 
According to the board, the funds were largely realised through agricultural zakat, with over 86,000 bags of grain collected and distributed to communities. These were valued at more than ₦4.7 billion and shared among over 250,000 beneficiaries, targeting the poorest households within the same communities where the contributions were sourced. 
The initiative is part of a broader effort to revive traditional Islamic welfare systems, with authorities emphasising transparency, local distribution, and accountability. Officials added that collections have already increased in 2026, with additional streams such as livestock zakat introduced, as the state continues to expand programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting vulnerable populations.
