Political analyst Stanley Otoma has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appointment of former Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa as a calculated and strategic step toward strengthening his chances for re-election in 2027. According to Otoma, the move reflects a deliberate effort to consolidate political influence in the South-South region, which remains a critical bloc in Nigeria’s electoral landscape. 
The appointment positions Okowa as a key figure in mobilising grassroots support and coordinating political structures within the region. Analysts note that Okowa’s extensive political experience—spanning roles as governor, senator, and party leader—makes him well-suited to drive Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda and expand the administration’s appeal beyond its traditional strongholds. His influence in Delta State and across the Niger Delta is seen as a major asset in building alliances ahead of the next general elections. 
With the 2027 Nigerian general election already shaping political calculations nationwide, observers say such appointments highlight early positioning by the ruling party. Tinubu, who is expected to seek a second term, appears to be leveraging experienced political figures like Okowa to strengthen regional outreach, counter opposition coalitions, and secure broader national support as the race gradually takes form.
