Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has suspended recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following an ongoing legal dispute over the party’s control. The decision comes amid conflicting claims by rival factions within the party, each asserting legitimacy over its national leadership.
INEC said it is acting in compliance with a court directive ordering all parties to maintain the status quo pending the final determination of the case. As part of this move, the commission has declined to recognise any factional leadership and will not monitor conventions or congresses organised by any of the disputing groups until the matter is resolved in court. 
The development underscores deepening internal divisions within the ADC, which has recently gained prominence as a coalition platform ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts warn that the crisis—and INEC’s decision to freeze recognition—could disrupt the party’s organisational activities and weaken its ability to compete effectively unless a clear legal resolution is reached.
