Former Kano State Governor and presidential hopeful Rabiu Kwankwaso has called for the violence in Plateau State and other conflict‑prone areas of Nigeria to be treated as a national emergency, urging the federal government to take decisive action against recurring attacks. According to Kwankwaso, the persistent killings and kidnappings across parts of the country pose a serious threat to national stability and require urgent, coordinated responses from security agencies and policymakers.
Kwankwaso criticised what he described as “piecemeal measures” by authorities, arguing that current efforts have been insufficient to stem the rising tide of violence. He emphasised the need for a comprehensive security strategy that integrates improved intelligence gathering, better equipment for security forces, and targeted socio‑economic interventions in vulnerable communities to tackle the root causes of conflict.
The former governor’s remarks come amid increasing attacks—including killings in Jos North Local Government Area, where gunmen have reportedly struck communities, leading to multiple deaths and abductions. Kwankwaso’s call echoes similar appeals from civil society and religious leaders who have urged the government to prioritise security ahead of the 2027 general elections to protect lives, property, and democratic processes.
