A Federal High Court in Abuja has again nullified the 2025 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in Ibadan, ruling that it was conducted in violation of the party’s constitution and internal democracy principles. The judgment also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising or implementing any outcomes from the disputed exercise.
Delivering the judgment, Justice James Omotosho agreed with the plaintiffs that key provisions of the PDP constitution were breached during the convention, including infractions related to delegate selection and procedural lapses. The court held that such irregularities invalidated the process and undermined the credibility of any leadership mandates purportedly confirmed at the event. As a result, INEC was ordered not to give effect to the convention’s results until proper internal democracy mechanisms are followed.
The ruling adds to ongoing challenges within the PDP as rival factions continue to contest leadership legitimacy and organisational direction. Legal experts said the decision could deepen internal tensions and complicate the party’s efforts to present a united front ahead of future elections, underscoring broader concerns about internal party democracy and judicial intervention in political affairs.
