Prominent Nigerian political figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, have paid condolence visits to former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. The late matriarch reportedly passed away in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness, prompting an outpouring of sympathy from political allies and associates who gathered at his Abuja residence.

The visits came shortly after El-Rufai was granted temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), where he had been detained over alleged financial misconduct. He was released on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend his mother’s burial, a development that has drawn public attention and sparked political reactions.

Other notable figures who joined the condolence visit included former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, reflecting a broad cross-section of Nigeria’s political class. Observers note that the gathering not only underscores the influence of El-Rufai in national politics but also comes amid ongoing scrutiny of his legal challenges, adding a political undertone to what is primarily a moment of mourning.
