Lagos Government Summons Electricity Operators Over Poor Power Supply

The Lagos State Government has moved to address the worsening electricity supply across the state by summoning electricity regulators, distribution companies and other power-sector operators for an urgent meeting.

The development comes as residents and businesses in different parts of Lagos continue to complain about frequent power outages and reduced electricity supply.

According to reports published on Friday, November 6, the state government is bringing together key stakeholders in the electricity sector to discuss the challenges affecting power distribution and identify practical solutions.

The meeting is expected to involve electricity regulators, distribution companies, electricity resellers and power suppliers.

The intervention comes at a difficult time for many Lagos residents, particularly small business owners who depend heavily on electricity to operate their businesses.

Hairdressers, barbers, restaurants, supermarkets, cold-room operators and other small businesses have continued to face additional operating expenses as they rely on generators and alternative power sources.

The recent electricity disruptions have also affected households, with many residents spending more money on petrol and diesel to maintain basic electricity supply.

The Federal Government recently attributed the wider decline in electricity generation to gas supply shortages affecting thermal power stations, reduced output from hydroelectric stations and maintenance challenges.

However, the Lagos State Government’s intervention is expected to focus on the challenges affecting electricity supply within the state and how operators can improve service delivery.

The meeting also raises questions about the responsibilities of electricity distribution companies and the need for better communication with consumers whenever power supply is disrupted.

Residents will be looking for practical improvements rather than another round of discussions, particularly as reliable electricity remains essential for economic activities across Lagos.
