Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has approved a 13th-month pension bonus and an additional ₦10,000 welfare support for pensioners in the state as part of efforts to improve the welfare of retired public servants.
The announcement is expected to bring relief to retirees who depend largely on their monthly pensions to meet their daily needs amid rising living costs.
The approval reflects the state government’s continued attention to the welfare of senior citizens, particularly those who spent several years working in the public service before retirement.
The governor also disclosed that his administration had paid ₦100 billion out of the ₦111 billion inherited gratuity backlog dating back to 2012. He assured retirees that efforts were ongoing to clear the remaining ₦11 billion before the end of his first term.
In addition, pensioners aged 65 and above were encouraged to register for the state’s health insurance scheme, which the governor said provides free coverage for eligible senior citizens.
The Nigeria Union of Pensioners welcomed the announcement and commended the state government for its attention to retirees’ welfare.
The development is significant as pensioners across Nigeria continue to face financial difficulties due to rising food prices, healthcare expenses and the increasing cost of living.
While the new benefits are expected to provide some relief, attention will now turn to the implementation and timely payment of the approved entitlements.
