NIMC Arrests Illegal NIN Registration Operators in Abuja, Seizes Enrolment Equipment

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspected illegal National Identification Number (NIN) registration operators during an enforcement operation in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and other locations across the country.

The commission also seized equipment allegedly used for unauthorised NIN registration, illegal modification of personal information and other activities linked to identity fraud.

NIMC disclosed that the operation was carried out by its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) as part of an intensified effort to stop illegal registration activities and protect the country’s national identity database.

According to the commission, some Nigerians experience problems with their NIN records because they use unapproved registration centres or engage individuals who claim they can make changes to personal information outside official procedures.

The agency warned that these activities could expose people’s personal information to fraud, identity theft and other security risks.

The Director-General of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s position against extortion and unethical practices, assuring Nigerians that the agency remains committed to providing reliable and accessible identity registration services.

The commission also reminded Nigerians that initial NIN registration must only be carried out at approved NIMC enrolment centres. Individuals who need to correct or update their personal information are advised to use the commission’s official self-service platform.

NIN holders were further encouraged to download the NINAuth application, available on Android and iOS devices, to access additional security features and services, including NIN slip printing.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to expand its national identity database, with millions of citizens already registered.

NIMC has therefore urged members of the public to avoid paying unauthorised agents for registration or modification services and to report suspicious activities through its official channels.

The commission says protecting the national identity database is important as the NIN continues to play a major role in accessing financial services, government programmes, telecommunications services and other essential activities in Nigeria.
