Five Nigerian police officers have been killed after armed gunmen attacked a vehicle transporting them along the Sokoto-Gusau highway in Zamfara State.
The attack happened on Monday evening, November 2, when the officers were travelling from Sokoto State to neighbouring Zamfara State in a commercial mass transit bus.
According to reports, the gunmen intercepted the vehicle along the highway and opened fire on the officers. The attack left five police personnel dead, raising fresh concerns about the safety of security officers and travellers using the route.
The incident was confirmed by the Zamfara State Police Command spokesperson, Abdullahi Faruk, who said the bodies of the officers had been deposited at the morgue of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto.
The circumstances surrounding the attack have raised concerns about the increasing risks faced by security personnel travelling between communities in Nigeria’s northwest.
The Sokoto-Gusau highway connects communities across Sokoto and Zamfara states and is an important route for commercial transportation and movement of residents.
The northwest region has continued to experience security challenges, including attacks by armed groups, kidnappings and assaults on travellers.
The killing of the five officers adds to concerns about the safety of highways and the protection of security personnel operating in the region.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine the identities of those responsible.
The incident has also renewed calls for stronger security measures along major highways in the northwest to protect commuters, commercial drivers and security personnel.
