The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received approximately 5,400 complaints and objections concerning Nigeria’s preliminary voters’ register as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed the figures on Friday while receiving an ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to the commission, more than 4,800 claims and approximately 600 objections had been submitted as of Thursday. The complaints include requests to correct personal information, discrepancies in voter records and other irregularities discovered during the public examination of the register.
Nigeria currently has more than 103 million registered voters, making the exercise a significant part of preparations for the forthcoming elections.
The complaints come amid growing controversy surrounding the preliminary register, following reports of questionable entries, duplicate records and suspected AI-generated photographs.
INEC has assured Nigerians that all valid complaints will be investigated and corrected before the final register is certified on December 15, 2026.
The commission also announced plans to conduct a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November. The exercise will test its voter accreditation and election-result transmission systems ahead of the general elections.
Another safeguard being introduced requires election results to be authenticated at polling units before transmission to INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
The ECOWAS delegation said its visit was intended to assess Nigeria’s electoral preparedness and identify areas where the regional organisation could provide technical support.
The development comes as political parties and election observers increasingly call for transparency and stronger safeguards to protect the credibility of the 2027 elections.
INEC says it remains committed to ensuring that eligible voters are properly represented and that errors in the preliminary register are addressed before the final publication.
