At least 62 people have been killed after gunmen attacked Binnari community in Taraba State, northeastern Nigeria, in a deadly assault that left residents injured, displaced and searching for missing relatives.
According to reports, the attack occurred on Friday, October 23. The gunmen reportedly invaded the community and opened fire on residents, forcing many people to flee their homes.
The state’s emergency agency said at least 52 people were injured, while thousands were displaced by the violence. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as rescue and recovery operations continued.
Some residents reportedly attempted to escape by running toward the Benue River. According to Amnesty International Nigeria, several people jumped into the river while fleeing the attackers.
Authorities recovered bodies from the river as emergency workers continued searching for victims.
The attack has raised renewed concerns about insecurity in northern and northeastern Nigeria, where armed groups have carried out killings, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.
Police said officers remained at the scene to investigate the incident and account for additional victims.
The identities of the attackers and their motive were not immediately established. The incident has intensified calls for stronger security measures to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.
Residents affected by the violence are also facing the challenge of displacement, with many forced to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere.
The attack adds to the growing security concerns facing Nigeria as communities continue to demand effective protection from armed groups.
