Federal Government Begins Construction of 17.7MW Mini-Grids in Oyo State

The Federal Government has commenced construction of five interconnected mini-grid electricity projects in Oyo State, with a combined capacity of 17.7 megawatts, in a move aimed at improving electricity supply to communities and supporting economic activities.

The projects were announced during a groundbreaking ceremony in Oyo State on Thursday, October 15, with Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe highlighting the government’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity.

The mini-grids are expected to improve power availability for households, small businesses and other electricity consumers in the benefiting communities. The projects also include battery storage facilities designed to store electricity for use when immediate generation is insufficient.

Reliable electricity remains a major concern for Nigerian businesses, many of which depend on petrol or diesel generators to keep their operations running during power interruptions. These alternatives increase operating costs, particularly for small enterprises with limited financial resources.

Improved electricity supply could help businesses reduce their dependence on generators, preserve perishable goods, operate equipment more consistently and serve customers for longer hours.

The Federal Government has also maintained that improving power generation and distribution is essential to supporting industrial growth and creating a more favourable environment for investment.

However, the impact of the new projects will depend on their completion, effective maintenance and the ability to deliver a consistent supply to the communities they are designed to serve.

The initiative represents another step in Nigeria’s efforts to address electricity challenges, although wider improvements will still be needed across the country’s power sector.
