Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the next round of the African qualifying campaign for the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games after delivering a convincing performance against Comoros.
The Nigerian women defeated Comoros 5–0 in the second leg of their first-round encounter on October 13, completing a commanding 7–0 aggregate victory across both legs. The result secured Nigeria’s progression and set up a meeting with Morocco in the next round.
The Super Falcons entered the return fixture with a 2–0 advantage from the first leg and strengthened their position with another dominant display. Toni Payne scored twice, while Uchenna Kanu and Christy Ucheibe were also among the goalscorers as Nigeria overwhelmed their opponents.
The result demonstrated Nigeria’s attacking strength and gave the team valuable momentum as the Olympic qualifying competition becomes more demanding. The Falcons will now face a tougher test against Morocco, a side that has made significant progress in women’s football in recent years.
Nigeria’s qualification campaign comes with considerable expectations. The Super Falcons are Africa’s most successful women’s national team, and their supporters will expect the players to compete strongly for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
However, the upcoming encounter with Morocco is expected to require greater concentration, particularly in defence and midfield. Morocco have developed a competitive national side and will be eager to challenge Nigeria’s position among Africa’s leading teams.
The coaching staff will also need to monitor the fitness of key players ahead of the next round. Reports following the Comoros match indicated that captain Rasheedat Ajibade had suffered an injury, with interim coach Augustine Eguavoen providing an update on her condition. Her availability could be an important consideration as preparations continue.
For Nigeria, the objective will be to maintain the attacking confidence shown against Comoros while improving coordination and discipline against stronger opposition. The team must also avoid becoming complacent after its comfortable first-round victory.
The Olympic qualifying campaign offers the Falcons an opportunity to return to the global stage after their appearance at the Paris 2024 Games. Securing a place at Los Angeles 2028 would be a significant achievement for the team and Nigerian women’s football.
With the Comoros challenge completed, attention now turns to Morocco and the next stage of the competition. The Falcons will need to deliver another strong performance over the two legs if they are to continue their pursuit of Olympic qualification.
