Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has withdrawn from Nigeria’s international friendly against Russia scheduled for Tuesday, October 6.
Ndidi, who plays for Turkish club Beşiktaş, had been included in coach Eric Chelle’s 24-man squad for the match but is no longer expected to participate.
The reason for his withdrawal has not been confirmed.
The development comes as Nigeria prepares for the friendly following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in the team’s latest 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.
The Russia fixture is expected to give Chelle an opportunity to assess several players as he continues to rebuild the national team.
A number of new players have been included in the squad, while experienced players such as Moses Simon, Stanley Nwabali, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Raphael Onyedika and Akor Adams are also part of the selection.
Kelechi Iheanacho has also returned to the squad after previously being left out.
Several players could make their senior international debuts in the match, including players from clubs in England, Portugal, Switzerland and other European leagues, as well as players from the Nigerian Premier Football League.
The Super Eagles travelled to Russia ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, with the match expected to provide another opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the team’s options ahead of future international assignments.
