Nigeria is seeking to move beyond traditional outsourcing and position itself as a stronger destination for AI-enabled digital services, as the country looks to expand its participation in the global digital economy.
The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, said Nigeria has an opportunity to develop a larger digital-services industry by investing in artificial intelligence skills, digital infrastructure and cybersecurity.
The push is aimed at taking advantage of Nigeria’s large young population and growing technology ecosystem.
Traditional outsourcing has already created opportunities for Nigerians to provide services to international companies remotely, including customer support, administrative services, technology and other professional services.
The government is now looking to build on that foundation by encouraging the development of higher-value digital services that use artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
Nigeria’s participation in the global digital economy could create opportunities for young professionals who develop skills in areas such as AI, software development, customer experience, data, cybersecurity and digital operations.
Officials say stronger infrastructure and investment in digital talent will be necessary if Nigeria is to compete effectively with other countries seeking a larger share of the global outsourcing and technology market.
The government is therefore pushing for greater investment in both digital infrastructure and human capital as it seeks to position Nigeria as a major destination for international digital work.
