The Dangote Petroleum Refinery supplied more petrol to the Nigerian market than all petroleum product importers combined in August, according to a report citing data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The development highlights the growing role of domestic refining in Nigeria’s petrol supply, as the 650,000-barrel-per-day Dangote refinery continues to increase its contribution to the local market.
According to the report, the refinery’s petrol supply exceeded the combined volume brought into the country by importers during the month. This marks another significant development in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The refinery, located in Lagos, has progressively expanded its production of petrol and other refined products since beginning commercial operations. Its increasing supply to the domestic market is expected to reduce the share of imported petrol and strengthen local refining capacity.
However, Nigeria’s petrol market remains exposed to changes in global crude oil prices. Recent increases in international oil prices have also pushed up domestic fuel costs, despite the growing availability of locally refined products.
The latest figures therefore underline both the progress being made in domestic refining and the continuing influence of international oil-market conditions on petrol prices in Nigeria.
