Nigeria Launches $300 Million Fund to Expand Renewable Energy Access

The Federal Government has officially launched a $300 million Distributed Renewable Energy Fund aimed at expanding access to electricity through off-grid and renewable energy projects across Nigeria.

The fund, backed by the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) and its partners, has now moved from the planning and structuring stage into capital deployment, according to Reuters.

The initiative is expected to support distributed energy solutions such as mini-grids and other renewable power systems, particularly in communities that remain underserved by the national electricity grid.

The launch comes as Nigeria continues to face challenges around electricity supply, infrastructure investment and access to reliable power. The government has increasingly turned to renewable and decentralised energy solutions as part of efforts to close the country’s electricity access gap.

The NSIA has said the fund is designed to attract additional private-sector investment into distributed renewable energy projects, potentially allowing more communities and businesses to gain access to alternative sources of electricity.

The development is also part of Nigeria’s wider push to increase investment in clean energy while reducing dependence on traditional power infrastructure.

With capital deployment now beginning, attention is expected to shift toward the projects that will receive funding, the communities targeted and how quickly the investments translate into additional electricity capacity.
