The Federal Government has announced an intensified nationwide campaign to tackle illiteracy and expand access to education, as Nigeria marks International Literacy Day 2026.
The initiative will focus on strengthening the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC), expanding learning centres and increasing access to skills development, technical and vocational education and digital learning.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, disclosed the government’s plans during a briefing in Abuja ahead of International Literacy Day, which is being observed on September 8.
According to the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the government is working to make literacy more accessible to Nigerians who are outside the conventional school system. The programme is expected to include expanded learning opportunities and stronger integration of digital skills and vocational training.
The government also highlighted the importance of collaboration with state governments, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional and religious institutions, the private sector and community leaders.
The Federal Government said the renewed campaign is designed not only to improve basic reading and writing skills but also to support economic empowerment, social inclusion, digital participation and lifelong learning.
Kano State was cited as an example of how health and well-being education can be incorporated into mass literacy programmes.
The government’s renewed focus comes as Nigeria continues to face significant challenges around access to quality education, particularly among adults and communities with limited access to formal schooling.
Officials said strengthening mass literacy programmes could help more Nigerians acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to participate more effectively in the economy.
The Federal Government reaffirmed that its objective is to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind as the country expands access to education, skills development and digital opportunities.
