Nigeria’s Sovereign Wealth Authority Steps Up Investment in Digital Infrastructure

The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) is increasing its focus on digital infrastructure and technology as it seeks to position Nigeria as a major hub for artificial intelligence development in Africa.

The authority said it is expanding investments in digital infrastructure to help Nigeria move beyond being a consumer of global technology and become a country capable of building and hosting advanced artificial intelligence systems.

According to the NSIA, stronger digital infrastructure will be important to Nigeria’s ability to attract technology companies, support innovation and create new economic opportunities for young Nigerians.

The move comes as artificial intelligence continues to transform industries globally, including finance, healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing and telecommunications.

The NSIA’s strategy is expected to support the development of the infrastructure required to operate advanced digital services, while potentially creating opportunities for local technology companies and startups.

The authority also sees technology investment as part of a broader strategy to diversify Nigeria’s economy and reduce dependence on traditional sources of government revenue.

For Nigeria’s growing youth population, increased investment in digital infrastructure could also contribute to the development of new skills and employment opportunities, particularly in areas such as software development, artificial intelligence, data science and other technology-related fields.

The development reflects a growing push by Nigerian institutions to ensure the country plays a more active role in Africa’s rapidly developing digital economy.
