The Federal Government has made participation in Nigeria’s national tertiary education ranking exercise compulsory for all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Education Minister, Tunji Alausa, announced the policy in Abuja, saying the existing Nigerian Universities Ranking Advisory Committee has been expanded and renamed the Nigerian Tertiary Education Ranking Advisory Committee to reflect its broader mandate.
Under the new framework, the three categories of tertiary institutions will be assessed through a unified national ranking system, with the exercise funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. The 2026/2027 ranking exercise for universities is expected to begin in September, while the committee will determine when polytechnics and colleges of education will be incorporated into the process.
The Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, said the initiative would promote accountability, quality improvement and healthy competition among institutions. The government is also expected to develop formal guidelines and communicate the compulsory participation requirement to vice-chancellors and heads of other tertiary institutions.
