Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign when they face Madagascar on Friday, September 25, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
The match will be Nigeria’s first Group L qualifier, with the team also drawn alongside Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau. Midfielder Frank Onyeka says the squad is focused on starting the campaign strongly and will not underestimate Madagascar.
The fixture also marks the return of Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina to the national team after he missed a significant period through injury. Aina said he is motivated to help Nigeria secure all three points in the opening game.
There is also competition for the goalkeeper position, with Stanley Nwabali returning to the squad alongside Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo. Nwabali has returned to regular club football with Chippa United and earned his recall after previously being away from the national team.
Chadian referee Alhadji Allaou Mahamat has been appointed to officiate Friday’s encounter. He previously handled two Nigeria matches during the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, both of which Nigeria won.
Nigeria finished third at the 2025 AFCON and will now begin another qualification journey, with the opening match providing the first opportunity for the team to build momentum under coach Eric Chelle.
