Nigeria’s Lassa fever outbreak has continued to worsen, with the death toll rising to 252 and confirmed cases reaching 1,035, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. The NCDC reported 14 new confirmed infections during epidemiological week 33, recorded between August 10 and 16 in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo and Benue states.
The latest figures represent a continued increase in infections as health authorities maintain surveillance and response activities across affected states. Lassa fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease that can spread to humans through contact with food or household items contaminated by infected rodents, particularly the multimammate rat.
The NCDC continues to publish regular situation reports and coordinate Nigeria’s response to the outbreak, while urging heightened awareness, early detection and appropriate medical care for suspected cases.
