The Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hulayat Omidiran, has urged the Super Falcons to quickly move past their disappointing exit from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and concentrate on securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Omidiran made the appeal after Nigeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-final in Morocco, ending the Falcons’ hopes of defending their continental title. She commended the players and coaching staff for their efforts and encouraged them to remain united and focused as they prepare for their crucial World Cup qualification playoff against South Africa.
The FCC chairman acknowledged that the WAFCON setback was difficult but urged the players not to allow the disappointment to affect their preparations for the next challenge. She described the South Africa encounter as an opportunity for Nigeria to recover and keep its World Cup ambitions alive, stressing that the Falcons possess the quality, experience and character required to overcome the setback. Omidiran, who previously served twice as chairperson of the Nigeria Football Federation women’s committee, also appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting the team rather than turning against the players following their disappointing tournament.
Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes now depend on successfully navigating the playoff route after the quarter-final defeat. The Falcons must defeat South Africa to progress to the intercontinental playoff, where teams will compete for the remaining places at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Nigeria have appeared at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the tournament began in 1991, making qualification particularly important for the 10-time African champions.
