The northern Nigerian state where the United States staged Christmas Day air strikes targeting Islamist militants is preparing for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and trying to banish thoughts of the violence that has plagued the region
As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, residents of Sokoto, a northern Nigerian state largely untouched by the region’s typical unrest, are clinging to hopes for peace following surprise US air strikes on Christmas Day.
Sokoto holds particular significance during Ramadan, as it is home to Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslims. It is from here that the official announcement signaling the start of the month-long fast is traditionally made.
While neighbouring states have long grappled with insurgency and banditry, Sokoto has remained a relative haven. This sense of security was shattered on December 25, when the United States carried out air strikes in the state’s Tangaza district. Nigerian authorities confirmed the operation targeted “two major Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist enclaves.”
The strikes, which took place approximately 75 kilometres (about 47 miles) from the state capital, have left many residents shaken. At the Abu Hurairah central mosque on Friday, worshippers packed the interior, seeking spiritual guidance ahead of Ramadan. Despite the sweltering heat, including many children, the congregation listened as the imam delivered a sermon centred on brotherhood, charity, and unity.
For locals, the air strikes were an unprecedented event. “It is a new thing in this part of the country, having air strikes or bomb explosions,” said Ahmad Mustapha, a 37-year-old doctor, after Friday prayers. “It only happened once, when Boko Haram was at its peak.”
While the memory of the explosions lingers, there is a cautious sense of optimism that the sanctity of Ramadan could pave the way for lasting peace. Many are hoping the holy month will bring not only spiritual reflection but also a definitive end to the violence that has briefly touched their doorstep.
